Bharathanatyam
South Indian classical dance in the Kalakshetra style, from foundation to senior.
Bharathanatyam is a classical South Indian dance form taught at London Tamil Centre in the Kalakshetra style. It is one of the most popular Fine Arts subjects at Tamil School, with classes from foundation to senior level and more than 100 students.
Classes are on Sundays at Wembley High Technology College, East Lane, North Wembley, HA0 3NN, as part of London Tamil Centre Tamil School (Registered Charity 1018333).
Fine Arts run on Sundays from about 11.15am to 1.15pm (one-hour slots). Pupils may take up to two Fine Arts subjects. Several teachers are Kalakshetra-qualified from Chennai. Each year many students sit ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) examinations.
New dancers usually join a beginners’ class in September. Anyone who has already trained elsewhere is assessed (written and practical) and placed in the right group. Promotion inside the school is based on the school’s own term assessments, not only on external exam results.
Parents can also join adult Bharathanatyam while children are in Tamil language class.
